How many senators are there?
The U.S. Senate has 100 members, two from each of the 50 states. Each senator represents the whole state, not a House district.
The official Senate directory lists the current senators by state. A vacancy can leave a seat empty without changing the Senate’s 100 seats.
How many senators does each state have?
Every state has two U.S. senators, regardless of population. California and Wyoming each have two. The Senate’s equal state representation guide explains this constitutional rule.
The District of Columbia (D.C.) and U.S. territories have no U.S. senators because they are not states. Their House delegates do not hold Senate seats.
How long do senators serve?
Senators serve six-year terms. The Senate divides its seats into three election classes. About one-third of the seats face election every two years, rather than all 100 at once.
